If you’re one of our existing patients, you’ll already know that at Sparklysmile we highly encourage you to make chums with your gums. This is because a beautiful, sparkling smile is made up of many parts, and the gums are a vital framework for keeping everything in check.
In addition to happy gums, a healthy smile also depends on effective toothbrushing, flossing, and regular visits to see our fabulous hygiene team, who work five days a week at our Blackheath practice.
Is there anything else you can do to ensure a fresh and sexy smile? Well, no one likes bad breath, so combatting that is a great place to start. Bad breath, or halitosis, can be caused by a number of factors such as strong smelling foods like spices or garlic, smoking, certain medical conditions, or problems with the teeth and gums.
Here at Sparklysmile, our top tip in the fight against smelly breath is tongue cleaning. Just think, you focus your time cleaning all surfaces of your teeth and then neglect the biggest thing in your mouth… it’s time to show your tongue some love!
How to clean your tongue
Cleaning your tongue is quite simple and can be done with your toothbrush or a special tongue cleaner/scraper. We suggest trying with your toothbrush first of all to get used to it before deciding to splash out on a new tool.
Use a small amount of toothpaste on your brush, reach the back of your tongue and brush forwards. Do this across the entire surface of the tongue and then rinse with water. Fresh!
Many people do find that they will initially gag when starting to clean their tongue, which can be very off putting. We recommend starting slow and being consistent, most patients do build up a tolerance and find that after a few days the gag reflex will subside.
We look forward to seeing lots of sparkling clean tongues at your next appointments!
