Whenever you visit your dental practice for a check up or a hygiene appointment, your dental team will more than likely ask you about your oral hygiene routine, such as how often you brush and floss, and what type of toothbrush you use, etc.
If you’ve ever wondered why we are so interested in this, here’s a little insight into why… there are more than 70 types of bacteria that live inside our mouths and, while most of them live there harmlessly, some can cause tooth decay and gum disease if they are not effectively cleaned away.
These bacteria are microscopic in size, which means they can hide in every nook and cranny within the mouth such as between the teeth and along the gum line. If left there, some of these bacteria can react with the sugars in the foods and drinks we consume to create acids that attack the tooth enamel. Other bacteria can live below the gum line and cause inflammation of the gums, which can, in time, lead to tooth loss.
What can you do?
With this in mind, it becomes clear why maintaining an excellent oral hygiene routine at home is important. Brushing your teeth effectively for two minutes, twice a day, can help to ensure you are cleaning thoroughly. In addition, flossing and interdental cleaning with special small brushes is also absolutely vital, too. This cleans in between the teeth and below the gum line, where your toothbrush can’t reach.
Your dentist will also recommend how often you should visit the hygienist for professional cleaning. For most people, this will be every six months, but it may be necessary to attend more often. Here at Sparklysmile, you know we’re all about making chums with your gums, which is why we’re committed to providing you with a hygienist service five days a week at our practice.
